Control YouTube content available to users for Educational accounts

Problem

As an administrator, you can set up your network or managed devices to control which YouTube videos are available to employees and students in your organization.

Environment

  • Admin console

Solution

Set up a network

Option 1: Using DNS
  1. Open your network's DNS settings.
  2. Add a CNAME for the following hostnames:
    • m.youtube.com
    • youtubei.googleapis.com
    • youtube.googleapis.com
    • www.youtube-nocookie.com
  3. To set strict restricted access, set the CNAME value to restrict.youtube.com.
  4. To set moderate restricted access, set the CNAME value to restrictmoderate.youtube.com.

Option 2: Using HTTP headers
  1. Insert an HTTP header into requests to the following domains:
    • m.youtube.com
    • youtubei.googleapis.com
    • youtube.googleapis.com
    • www.youtube-nocookie.com
  2. To set strict restricted access, insert YouTube-Restrict: Strict.
  3. To set moderate restricted access, insert YouTube-Restrict: Moderate.
Note: HTTP header filtering is not supported for native mobile applications.

Option 3: Using Chromebook

Go to Safe Search and Restricted Mode to learn how to enable YouTube Restricted Mode.

After your DNS or HTTP headers have been set up, you can set up Video Approvers.

Cause

Default YouTube Age based restrictions allow all content that is appropriate for the permissions set, but it does not allow to only show approved videos. You need to set up a network.
