How to configure notifications for deprovisioned devices

Problem

You need to get notifications every time one of your devices gets deprovisioned.

Environment

  • ChromeOS

Solution

  1. Log in to the Admin console.
  2. Navigate to Rules.
  3. Click on Create rule and select Activity.
  4. Enter the name and description you want to use and click Next.
  5. Make sure the filter is Event > Is > Change Device State and click Next.
  6. Select the Threshold you want.
  7. Click on Send to alert center and then add email recipients to get email notifications.
    • Note that this will generate periodic notifications, depending on the selected threshold.
    • The email notifications might not be that easy to read but you just need to click on the View alert button.
    • That will get you to a detailed page in the Admin console for the alert and then you can click on Investigate alert to the left.
    • That will take you to the investigation tool with a filter set for you to see all deprovisioning or re-enrollment made.
There is no option to filter the event and show only deprovisioned or powerwashed (repurposed) devices but the event Change Device State events will provide you with the information you need. Records like from ACTIVE to ACTIVE means the device was Powerwashed, if the device was Deprovisioned it will show from ACTIVE to DEPROVISIONED and if the device was re-enrolled then you will see from DEPROVISIONED to ACTIVE.
