How to enable Virtual Machines on ChromeOS

Problem

You're looking for a way to enable Linux virtual machines for ChromeOS devices.

Environment

  • ChromeOS

Solution

  1. In your Google Admin console .
  2. Go to Menu > Devices > Chrome > Settings > Users & browsers.

    Requires having the Mobile Device Management administrator privilege.

  3. To apply the setting to all users and enrolled browsers, leave the top organizational unit selected. Otherwise, select a child organizational unit.
  4. Scroll down to the Virtual machines (VMs) and developers section. 
  5. Change the Linux virtual machines (BETA) setting to Allow usage for virtual machines needed to support Linux apps for users.
