Server denied POP3 access received when trying to add another account to Check mail from other accounts setting

Problem

You are unable to add another Google Workspace account to the setting Check mail from other accounts when using an account without 2SV due to the error: Server denied POP3 access to given username and password.

Environment

  • Gmail web interface

Solution

  1. Open a new incognito window and go to Google Mail.
  2. Sign in to the account you are trying to add in Check mail from other accounts.
  3. Go to Less secure apps access and make sure Less secure apps is enabled.
  4. In the same incognito window, open a new tab.
  5. Go to Display Unlock Captcha and click Continue
  6. Try again to add the account in Check mail from other account settings.
  7. Make sure you’re using the following settings:
  • Username: Full email address of the account you are trying to add Password: Password of the account you are trying to add
  • POP Server: pop.gmail.com
  • Port: 995
  • Leave a copy of the retrieved message on the server: Unchecked
  • Always use a secure connection (SSL) when retrieving mail: Checked

Cause

This is caused due to Less secure apps being turned off when an account doesn't have 2SV.
