Prevent new unmanaged work accounts

Available only if you verified your domain

Even if you transfer all of your users’ existing unmanaged work accounts, unmanaged users in your organization can still create unmanaged work accounts. You can set an option to prevent unmanaged work account creation.

Turn unmanaged work account creation on or off

If you disable unmanaged user account creation, any existing unmanaged user accounts remain unless you transfer them.

  1. In the Google Admin console, go to Menu and then Directory and then Unmanaged users and then Work accounts.

Requires having the Transfer unmanaged work accounts administrator privilege.

  2. Click Manage settings and then Unmanaged work/school accounts.
  3. Select whether to allow users to create unmanaged work or school accounts.
  4. Click Save.

Troubleshoot unmanaged work account creation issues

Even if you allow your users to create unmanaged work accounts, we might temporarily disallow unmanaged work account creation. If we take this action, the Unmanaged work/school accounts page includes an “Unmanaged work account creation is temporarily paused.” alert.

We pause creation of these accounts if you:

  • Upgrade to a Google Workspace for Education edition from a non-Education edition
  • Transfer your Workspace subscription to a reseller

We’ll be removing these restrictions soon. To check if the pause has been lifted:

  1. In the Google Admin console, go to Menu and then Directory and then Unmanaged users and then Work accounts.

Requires having the Transfer unmanaged work accounts administrator privilege.

  2. Click Manage settings and then Unmanaged work/school accounts.
  3. If the “Unmanaged work account creation is temporarily paused.” alert is no longer on the page, users can resume creating unmanaged accounts if enabled.
