Use the data import tool to copy your users' chat messages from channels in Microsoft Teams to your organization's Google Workspace account. You set up the import in the Google Admin console. The import process takes place in the cloud.
Requirements & setup steps for Google Workspace
- The import must be run by a super administrator. For details, go to Prebuilt administrator roles.
- You must give each Google Workspace user a user account before they can sign in and use Google services. Chat import only imports data to accounts of existing users. It doesn't create user accounts from the data it imports. For details about user accounts, go to Options for adding users.
- You need to turn on the Google Chat service for the users in your target account. For details, go to Turn a service on or off for Google Workspace users.
- Before your users can start to use Google services, they need a user license. For details, go to How licensing works.
- In your Google Admin console, complete the following actions:
- Turn off auto-deletion. For details, go to Turn auto-deletion on or off for messages in spaces.
- Automatically accept chat invitations.
Requirements for Microsoft Teams
- A user with the Global Administrator role.
- A good comprehension of your Teams' setup. To understand your teams' hierarchy, you can export a list of your teams as a comma-separated values (CSV) file. For details, go to Manage teams in the Microsoft Teams admin center.

The data import tool is intended as a productivity feature and is not designed to assist with legal compliance matters. You and your organization are responsible for assessing and meeting your organization's legal compliance needs. If you require chat messages for legal compliance purposes, consider backing up the messages in Teams prior to importing data to Google Workspace.
