Understand chat import reports

If you import users' chat messages with the data import tool, you can access 2 import reports. The 2 types of reports are a summary report and a data import report.

Export the reports

After you run a chat import, you can download the 2 reports in the Google Admin console of your target account.

You must be signed in as a super administrator for this task.
  1. In the Google Admin console, go to Menu and then Data and then Data import & export and then Data import.

You must be signed in as a super administrator for this task.

  2. To export the reports to Google Sheets, click View data import logs or Export summary report.

If the amount of data in the report exceeds the limit allowed in Sheets, the report is downloaded as a comma-separated values (CSV) file.

  3. If the Tasks list doesn't open automatically with the downloaded report, click Tasks .

  4. For Your Tasks, click the link to open the file in Sheets.

Understand the summary report

The summary report provides a count of the number of messages that imported or failed to import for each channel.

Summary report field Description
Team ID The ID of the team.
Channel ID The ID of the channel.
Space ID The ID of the new Google Chat space. If a Chat space wasn't created, the report value is missing.
Import status Status of the chat import:
  • Completed—All messages imported successfully.
  • Running—Import is still in progress.
  • Failed—The new space wasn't created.
Messages imported Number of messages and replies that imported successfully.
Messages failed Number of messages and replies that failed to import. To troubleshoot, check the data import report.
Messages skipped Number of messages and replies that were skipped and not imported.
Discovery issues The number of failures encountered by the system when crawling the source channel.

Interpret the data import report

Use the data import report to identify messages that didn't import and the reasons for the failure.

Error report field Description

Error/warning code & description The code and message associated with the error or warning status.

For help with frequently seen error messages, go to Troubleshoot common error messages (later on this page).

Resolve common error messages

If you get an error that's not mentioned in this table, try running a delta import.
