Conversation history lets users see and continue their past chats with Gemini in Workspace. As an administrator, you can decide how conversation history works for your team, including if users can keep or delete their conversations.

Allow users to delete conversations
This setting determines if users can delete their own conversations with Gemini in Workspace. If you turn this setting off, users see a message explaining that their admin has disabled this option.

Sign in with a super administrator account to the Google Admin console.
If you aren't using a super administrator account, you can't complete these steps.

In the Google Admin console, go to Menu
Generative AI
Gemini for Workspace.
Requires having the Gemini Settings administrator privilege.
- Go to Conversation history & deletion
Manual deletion.

(Optional) To apply the setting only to some users, at the side, select an organizational unit (often used for departments) or configuration group (advanced).

- Select On or Off.
- Click Save.
Auto-deletion settings
To support your organization's data retention policies, you can choose whether to automatically delete inactive conversations. Conversations are considered inactive if messages haven't been added or edited over a set period of time. You can also allow users to choose their own auto-deletion settings.
Conversations that match your settings are usually deleted within a day, but processing errors might cause delays.

- Choose an option:
- Let users choose their own setting
- Delete after 90 days (~3 months)—Conversations are automatically deleted 90 days after the last interaction.
- Delete after 540 days (~18 months)—Conversations are automatically deleted 540 days after the last interaction.
- Delete after 1080 days (~3 years)—Conversations are automatically deleted 3 years after the last interaction.
- Don't automatically delete—Conversations are retained indefinitely.
- Click Save.
