Control temporary chats and chat deletion in the Gemini App

As an administrator, you can allow people in your organization to control if they want to save or delete Gemini chats. You can let users start temporary chats that don't save to their Gemini app activity. You can also let users delete their Gemini chat conversations.

Vault and temporary chats & chat deletion

These features work differently if your organization uses Google Vault for Gemini and if you have Vault retention rules for Gemini activity.

  • Google Vault retention—If your organization uses Google Vault for Gemini, your Vault retention rules apply to chat data, even if users start temporary chats or delete their conversations. This is similar to how Vault works with Gmail and other Workspace services.
  • User transparency—Users see a message in the Gemini app which states that even if they start temporary chats or delete chats, their Gemini activity might still be visible to Google Workspace admins or Vault users.
