View a group's members

This page is for administrators who manage groups for an organization. If you're not an admin and need help managing your own groups, go to the Learning Center.

As a Groups administrator, you can always view the members of all of your organization's groups. The access and visibility settings you choose for your organization's groups, combined with an individual group's settings, determine who else can view the group's members.

Glossary: Classification of groups & membership types

  • Parent groups: These are primary, top-level groups that can contain both individual members and other groups as child groups.
  • Child groups: Also known as nested groups or subgroups, these are groups added as members under a parent group.
  • Direct members: Individuals or entities added specifically to a group.
  • Indirect members: Individuals or entities who gain membership to a parent group by virtue of being a member of a nested child group.
  • Internal members: Individuals belonging to your organization.
  • External members: Individuals outside of your organization who are invited to participate in a group.
  • Internal groups: Groups with the current setting Allow external members in the group turned off.
  • External groups: Groups with the current setting Allow external members in the group turned on.
  • Filtered-out members: For internal parent groups, external members in child groups are automatically filtered out (excluded) from the parent internal group. These external members retain their membership in the child group.

In the Google Admin console, you can review all members of a group (direct and indirect, including banned members) in a single list. If groups are members of the parent group, they appear in the list as members. Members of groups nested in other groups appear as indirect members of the parent group. If a member belongs to the parent group and another group nested inside the group, they are direct and indirect members.

When reviewing group members, note the following:

  • If groups are members of the parent group, they appear as a child group in the list as members.
  • Members of groups nested in other groups appear as indirect members of the parent group. If a member belongs to the parent group and another group nested inside the group, they are direct and indirect members.
  • For groups classified as internal, external members in nested (child) groups are automatically filtered out (excluded) from the parent internal group. These external members retain their membership in the child group.
    • This means those external members of the child group are effectively no longer members of the parent group, so anything shared with the parent group does not go to the external members of the child group.
    • If they have the correct permissions, users can change the parent group to external, which includes the external members of the child group in the parent group's membership.

To review all members of a group:
